I note you have obtained Marconi Mk3 camera chain service manuals Troy. I cut my teeth on Marconi Mk4 black and white cameras with ABC-TV in the early 1970's. You needed a ton of light for them as the tube was very insensitive. In a studio interview situation each person had 2KW key light 1KW fill light and 2x 1KW back lights on them. We had to clean the face plate of the image orthicon camera tube regularly with tissue paper as any dust on the face plate would show up on the image. The front of the camera could be opened for this purpose. Replacement tubes could be ordered at around $15k ..... so don't do sun shots sonny!. Pointing them at the lights could leave a burn mark on the tube not very nice!. The handle on the side of the camera was to rotate the fixed focal length lenses. There were four lenses ranging from wide to telephoto. The widest angle lens was a 2 inch. The 5 inch was a portrait lens. You had to "dolly the camera" towards the subject to get closer or "rack over" to a tighter angle lens, preferably whilst not on air. Later we had a 10:1 zoom lens on one camera which every cameraman wanted to use. On outside broadcasts we also had a 40:1 zoom lens which really sucked up the light paticularly if zoomed well in (a lens effect is called ramping). Late afternoon football shots looked almost like a night time match. The cameras were made in England and were generally very reliable. We replaced the Mark 4s with Mk8s in 1975 when the change to colour came. The Mk8 was a quantum leap in technology.

G'day.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with these early cameras, it's great hearing about what it's like to operate them. I'm amazed the IO tubes were insensitive to light as I've read they were good in low light conditions. I know for a fact the TK-41 colour cameras needed extreme bright lights due to the primary colour filters shading most of the light. Over in England a couple of MK4 cameras have been restored to working order and were used along with a MK5 for the broadcast from Alexandra Palace in 2006 to celebrate 70 years of television and it has been released on DVD and is available on Ebay in UK http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0566144351 . I bought myself a copy and am really impressed to see original IO pictures shot in recent times :).
